Hair fall is a major concern for both men and women living in different parts of the world. Hair is important as it is closely linked with beauty and youth. Before trying to know the reason behind hair fall, you must understand the anatomy of hair growth.
Hair grows in a cycle that consists of three stages –Anagen, Catagen and Telogen. Anagen means the growing stage, Catagen means the resting phase and Telogen means the shedding stage. Each and every strand of hair follows a particular pattern of hair growth cycle. It is not that each hair strand will be at the same stage of hair growth. If one is at the Anagen phase, the next one will be at Catagen or Telogen. Also hair growth cycle is randomly distributed on the scalp, hair fall does not cause bald spots at one place.
Typically the growing stage of hair follicles lasts about three to five years. After that hair follicles enter the resting phase that lasts for just one to two weeks where the hair is attached to the follicle but growth does not happens. The finally stage is the shedding stage that lasts for three to four months. During this stage hair will gradually fall out and in its place a new hair will start growing by entering the Anagen stage and then gradually moving towards the last stage to complete the hair growth cycle. Normally, the hair growth rate is 1.25 centimeters or 0.5 inches per month, or around 15 centimeters in a year.
This is how hair growth cycle takes place. The time period for hair to stay in the hair follicle is genetically predetermined and an average hair fall of 100 hairs per day is considered normal. But we often notice excess hair fall which can be due to various reasons. If often come to the conclusion that use of harsh chemicals, excessive use of chemical treatments or regular blow drying of hair are the main reasons behind hair fall. Well, these can be the reasons but there can be some natural reasons also behind hair fall.
Here are some natural reasons behind hair fall:
Your hair growth cycle can get disturbed by the change in the season. This is very common to notice less hair fall during the winter months while more hair fall occurs during the summer days. Also during the rainy days if proper care of hair is not taken, it can cause hair fall. With season the moisture level in the air changes which causes hair fall. For all the seasons you need to follow different hair care routines. For instance during the summer you must protect the hair from the harmful UV rays of the sun and in winter protect your hair from snow and windy air. Also those who need to shift locations can suffer from hair fall. When you change locations there will also be change in environment and climatic conditions.
Environmental factor such as pollution can also be the reason behind hair fall. It has been found that those living in polluted area witness more hair fall as compared to those living in healthy environment. The toxins and carcinogens found in highly polluted area will not allow hair to grow properly and can cause hair fall and dullness. Also the dust particles found in polluted area can cause scalp infections leading to hair fall. To escape the drawbacks of pollutants found in your environment, you must always cover your hair with a hat, cap or bandana whenever you are going out.
Usually hard water or poor quality of water can also cause excessive hair fall. Hard water has high amount of mineral content like calcium, copper and magnesium which are not good for hair growth. It has also been found that hair fall can also occur when it comes in contact with water containing high amount of salt and chlorine like the water in the swimming pool. If you have hard water, you need to first decrease the mineral content of the water with the help of a water softener machine and then only you must use the water to wash your hair.
It is very natural to witness excessive hair fall post pregnancy as during pregnancy the normal hair growth cycle gets temporarily distributed due to the various hormonal changes in the body. During pregnancy, hair follicles remain in the resting phase for a longer period of time instead to shedding. But post pregnancy will hair follicles will come to the shedding phase causing more hair fall. If you are having hair fall after giving birth, there is nothing to worry about as your hair growth cycle will get back to normal with time. However, if you follow a proper hair care routine during pregnancy you can definitely enjoy beautiful hair after the delivery of your baby.
It is a known fact that for proper hair growth a well balanced diet is a must. But at times normal healthy people also witness hair fall. Well, this can be due to eating disorder problems such as anorexia or bulimia. Also those who feed themselves on crash diets can witness hair fall. Eating disorder means the body is not getting the required dose of protein, vitamins, and minerals to promote hair growth. At times people also make the mistake of taking supplements. But if you are not eating properly no medicine can help in hair growth. Supplements will work only when it is supported by a well balanced diet.
