Women who are pregnant need 11 mg per day, and lactating women require 12 mg. However, the optimal amount is 15-50 mg zinc a day, depending on the amount of zinc you are losing on daily basis. Zinc comes out from the body through stool, urine and sweat.  Also drinking coffee and alcohol, as well as smoking can reduce the zinc level in the body leading to its deficiency.

How to solve zinc deficiency:

When it comes to zinc deficiency, there is no need to take zinc supplements. Just take a well balanced diet and you body will get ample zinc required for hair growth. The best absorbed form of zinc is available from animal foods, particularly beef, pork, lamb, oysters, liver, shellfish like whelks and crabs, and red meat. Fish is a rich source, but it contains less zinc as compared to red meat. Other sources of zinc are wheat germ, pine nuts, lima beans, chickpeas, raw cashews, peanuts, peanut butter and almonds. Well, along with zinc your diet must have all the essential vitamins and minerals that are essential for hair growth. When it comes to zinc deficiency, there is no need to take zinc supplements.
