So when used as a conditioner, coconut oil promotes hair growth.

Moisturizing quality:

Coconut oil is an excellent emollient. It is also a good source of various fatty acids like oleic acid, linoleic acid, lauric acid, capric acid, caprylic acid, myristic acid and palmitic acid. All these fatty acids help in maintaining the moisture level on the scalp as well as hair. Properly moisturized hair will grow faster by reducing the chances of breakage and damage which can slow down the hair growing process. For those having dry hair, coconut oil is the best daily moisturizer. .

When it comes to baldness, coconut oil is very effective in stopping hair from falling out. Its regular use can even cause hair to re-grow on parts of the scalp that has stopped producing hair. When you massage your scalp with coconut oil it improves the blood circulation to the scalp and hair follicles, which helps hair follicles to absorb the valuable nutrients necessary for hair re-growth.

Stops hair damage:

Coconut oil is rich in medium chain triglycerides which allow deep penetration of nutrients inside the shaft of the hair. This helps in protecting the hair from protein loss and increases hair volume. It also saves your hair from protein loss that happens due to applying of shampoo. Lack of protein is often the reason behind hair breakage and hair loss. Another good thing about coconut oil is that it is fully packed with vitamin E which has the ability to offer nutrients to the hair.

Use Virgin Coconut Oil:

For hair growth, it is advisable to use only virgin coconut oil. Do not use the regular, refined coconut oil on hair as it does not contain the necessary fatty acids required for effective hair growth. Virgin coconut has all the properties that can promote faster and healthy hair growth. You can easily find virgin coconut in markets.

@grace, yes! coconut oil WILL help your hair. the coconut oil i use is the refined, but im going to get the virgin kind just to try. comb your hair out as best as you can and split it into sections, that way its easier to apply. @caeley, yes because its an oil, the heat from your hands will break it down and cause it to turn into a liquid form, i find having it start out as a solid is easier. just rub it in your hands and apply it to your roots and then through out the hair. i leave mine in any where from an hour to two hours, or over night. hope this helps (: i LLLLOVEE coconut oil<33

Great article, however coconut oil contains no protein it helps hair by reducing protein loss from the hair shaft. It is especially good for people who have dyed or bleached their hair. It is also very good to apply overnight the day before dying or bleaching as it stops the drying effect. The drying effect is due to the chemicals stripping the protein from the hair.
I have used coconut oil 2x a day only a scrapping from the ears down and once a week as a heavy pre shampoo treatment and have grown from very short to near butt length in the space of 7 years. Its not that it grows hair but it retains the length you naturally grow. Hair grows from the scalp so no oil is going to speed that up but oils can keep hair at its healthiest to allow the maximum length ie stop it breaking.
